Stun doesn't break on damage but this thing has few yards of deathzone so it can't be used on to people at melee range of you. It's also instant but you need to stop to use it.

Can backfire dealing damage to you and party members around you. Didn't stun. 6 uses so far, 1 backfire.

The trinket has 6 charges but can be recharged. The recharging is far cheaper than creating the trinket and requires Goblin Engineering.

I'm gnomish engy... If you get a gob engy to craft the mortar can you then get the schematix to reloaded so you can skill to 375?

Either something went wrong with my training or they removed "reloaded" altogether. Certainly its not on my list of craftables for my latest engineer.

Is this item useful in pvp at all? I mean, is there a set chance of it succeding or does it work all the time? Is the range great at all?

It has 6 charges, not "0". Only goblin engineers can recharge it, but since it's bind-on-equip, gnomish engineers will have to buy a new one.

The range is very nice, only drawback is you cant "plunk" it right at your feet like many bombs.

It works well for stand off people, stunned players, or mobs that your pet is tanking (me warlock)

in grouping anti enviroment play, this is my fav bomb.

in PVP its nice, but the min range is too far away to say, nail that pesky rogue.
bomb dispenser is nice, so is "the big one"

Don't "reload" the mortar with multiple mortars in your inventory as it will use all the mortars and create one "reloaded" mortar. Drop one off in the bank, reload, and then come back to the bank and swap out, rinse and repeat.

I carry two mortars so that I'm not shy about using them- since the reload is so cheap.

That would be cool if that is how it works.

OK...What gives. Does it have a cast time? Does it automatically launch the mortar at a selected target (if so can u use it as you move)? Do you have to aim where it goes as you do when throwing gernades, if so this is worthless in pvp because it takes to much time to screw with. Please answer questions so i know if i should invest in the scamatics

You have to aim this like you do for a grenade; it won't just launch at the selected target. On the other hand it has no casting time, which I find makes it much easier to use than most bombs.

it has a small cast time but is no where near useless in PVP ..as a rogue just stun them back off mortar them ...or blind them ..or gouge them ...or kidney shot ect..same would go for poly morph or other things that would hold thing in place...seduce ect just for a sec ..and youve added 500 damage and stunned them =)

actually the best thing that can happen, run into a group of horde, fire it, and hope it misfires, 'cause that'll do all of the misfire dmg to them too. effectively, you'll all die.

I was chomping at the bit to make this, based on the earlier comments I thought it was going to be a FUN toy compared to the regular mortar, but it's a bad joke. The range is pathetic...either the above people are full of B.S. or WOW seriously nerfed this item. Who ever heard of a mortar that fires 10 feet!

Not even the best goblin trinket... I do believe the range was nerfd at some point, cuase now it shoots only a little further than you can throw a bomb, BUT theres a minimun range... bleh. You have to stand still to shoot it, although the only redeeming thing is it fires almost if not instantly - no progress bar shows up. But the graphic of it firing is TERRIBLE, I didn't even see anything the first time I fired it, and theres no real explosion or anything...
Bottom line: worth making if you go goblin, just for the occasional stun effect in BG, but not worth going goblin for (in my opinion). I'd have a deathray if it wasn't for The Big One and the bomb dispenser.

with patch 1.1 they changed the mortar range from 20m to 40m... yay : ) its absolutely great now. before it sucked. now its very nice to use a huge range and useability improvement.

Several people asked about this but I saw no answers:

Make the Goblin Mortar. Use all 6 charges. (Excellent weapon, by the way, with a 40-yard range as of 1.10 and it stuns instead of incapacitating the targets as do most bombs and bomb-like effects.) You will be left with a Goblin Mortar with 0 charges in your inventory.

Run the Mortar Reloaded recipe. One of the reagents for that recipe is a Goblin Mortar. Naturally, you will use your Goblin Mortar with 0 remaining charges. Make sure that is the only Goblin Mortar in your inventory when you run the Mortar Reloaded recipe. After you run the Mortar Reloaded recipe, you will have a new Goblin Mortar (with 6 charges, of course) in your inventory.

You can make a Goblin Mortar for a Gnome Engineer, but you won't be able to "reload" the mortar for him. Why? Because you're not really "reloading" the mortar - you're making a new one with the old one as one of the reagents and since the "old one" will be soulbound to the Gnome Engineer he can't hand it to you for use in the Mortar reloaded recipe.

Information is valid as per 1.11 patch mechanics.

I put this to use quite frequently. The best situation for it is, obviously, against large numbers, but it has the potential to be useful in any situation where you are able to quickly line up a shot as an artillery role.

The Mortar offers a lot of traits that you won't get on a standard grenade or bomb. First off, it fires instantly, but still has a travel time. What this means is you won't have to stand around or wait for a casting time when you deploy this. The graphic for it is oddly small for something that's supposed to be a mortar, but that can work to your advantage as it's hard for your opponents to see (and therefore dodge). For maximum effectiveness, you should have this trinket bound to a keyboard key - clicking it as an icon can lead to missed shots potentially, and delays your shot as the mouse cursor is your targetting reticle.

As mentioned, it provides a STUN instead of an incap, thus you can continue to do damage with this and not break the stun effect.

The mortar has a decent range (just under the range of an iron grenade, and roughly about the same as a mithril frag bomb) but it also has a minimum range, suiting it for stand off situations at best, and thus why it's best as an "artillery" role where you yourself are not the focus of someone.

The mortar has a woeful 10 minute cooldown, and does not share a cooldown with the engineer bombs/grenades. It does, however, share a cooldown with the ToEP, ZHC, and ToA, as well as many other types of damage trinkets, and this may be a deal breaker if you have these items and use them often.

The mortar comes with 6 charges, can be passed to a gnomish engineer (to the waste of the trinket, as it cannot be recharged by said gnome), and can be recharged fairly cheaply by another engineering recipe. As a side note, every time you recharge it, you destroy the old (used) one and receive a new one, thus make sure you only have one of these in your inventory at any time you wish to reload. Recharging the mortar removes the soulbound status on it.

The mortar has two different backfires that are potentially very annoying. The first is a chance to backfire while reloading it. If it backfires on reload, you will likely die to a massive fire damage hit (it generally is around 6000 damage), and you will lose some solid blasting powder (the mithril bars will be untouched, though). This fire damage does not damage adjacent friendly faction people, unfortunately, so there's no way to give that level 30 the surprise of his life while he's upping blacksmithing. The death caused by reload does not cause durability damage, however, so all you're going to lose is a couple blasting powder and have an annoying run back into Org. The second type of misfire has a chance to occur every time you fire the mortar itself, and it will cause you to receive the negative effects of the mortar. This misfire does not put the trinket on cooldown, nor does it expend a charge, however.

Some of the best usages of the mortar are blasting people off of WSG flag carriers, mass AV-style AOE damage and disruption (that can be comboed with a mithril frag/iron grenade followup), or scoring a free stun on enemies that you know will likely be stationary so long as they can hit you (such as hunters). It is easily comparable in value to situational trinkets such as the tidal charm due to its AOE nature.

reload this thing at max 3 times and level in engi no matter what level you are currently on, i've done this and now have a level 50 warlock with 375 engi (got ported to shatt to increase skill) now if only blizzard would fix the epic engi cap recipe i'd be all set

Always been a big fan of the Goblin Mortar, but it can't be used in battle any more. I tried this in AV last night 4/15/07 and it would not work while I was in battle. The only way I could use it is if I happened to be in the back of the main line and I openned up with it.

Consider all the other drawbacks on this weapon, this is an intollerable nerf. I hope they did not to the same to the rocket launcher.

was able to level from 210 to 300 reloading this thing. used a ton of solid stone and blew myself up between 10-15 times doing it lol

The level up doesn't work anymore. At 290 I finished the the 6 charges and proceed to make the reloaded. But my engineering skill still stuck at 290.

choose to be a goblin engineer (other choice is gnomish) from gadgetzen.

This is awesome, 1 mithril to recharge after 6 uses.

when I was lvl 35 I got a critical strike on a lvl 39 and it took off 75% of the players health.

hm seems that it doesnt work anymore to have a second mortar in the inv ....

it alwas tells me you have to equip it first ... tried all combinations, mortar 1 1st trinketslot mortar 2 on 1st, 1 on 2nd .....

only way to get it to work is if you equip both mortars, but then you miss the other cool trinkets :-((

It almost always works right, but two things that can happen, are a backfire(does about 500-600 dmg, and stuns briefly in an area of effect), and the ammo can get set off while you reload it(did it to me once out of about 7 reloads, did 7746 dmg).
However you will not lose a charge if it backfires, or lose mats if it goes off when reloading.

I made two of them so I could have 12 shots at a time, but it's annoying to reload them. You can't choose which one you're reloading, so half the time you'll try to reload the wrong one and explode. You have to stash the full one in the bank while you reload the empty one. :/

this isnt drop or bought from vendor, its bought from goblin only trainer. you have to be goblin to make it, or you will have to get it traded to you. if you arent goblin, then you cant reload it either, getting it remade is much for costly then reloading it, sux for gnomish engineers:) only 1mithril bar and 3 powder to get 6more shots.

Might actually be a nice alternative and may be useful for when you're getting stun locked by a rogue.

The reload schem you buy at the goblin engineer as well. Tip: don't reload a already full mortar. It explodes. I got hit with 9737 fire damage.

There's a lot of confusion about this currently. There are basically four types of items that can be made by engineers:

BoE items that can be used by any engineer and traded.
BoP items that can be crafted by a specific specialization, but used by any engineer
Items that require a specific specialization to use.
BoP items that can be crafted by an engineer, but can be used even after engineering is dropped

Gnomish Engineering allows you to craft these items:

If your intent is to switch to Goblin after crafting all the goodies (by dropping and re-leveling Engineering), you should probably craft all of these items, but you must craft Lunettes gnomes, Coq de combat gnome, Rayon mortel gnome, and Petit fumant (these are BoP) or you will lose access to these items permanently (unless you drop and re-level gnomish engineering again.

Transporteur ultra-sécurisé : Gadgetzan and Agrandisseur de monde cannot be used by a non-gnomish engineer, so you can skip crafting these if you're planning on switching.

NOTE: Rayon mortel gnome doesn't require Engineering to use, so technically, you could level Engineering to craft this item, and drop it and still be able to use it.
