Two great things about this trinket:

1. You get to swim around looking like a pirhana (or Frenzy, as Blizzard like to call them), which always grabs attention. However, if you jump/surface yourself or perform any action like mining, herbing or casting it boots you back into your natural form.

2. Practically, it comes in extremely handy if you are trying to compete for the Elemental Water patches or underwater Rich Thorium Veins in Azshara (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=7080). The Bay of Storms is a real money maker if you have that advantage.

How to get your hands on this trinket?

You must win the Stranglethorn Vale Fishing Extravaganza which is held every Sunday between 2-4pm game time. The first player to catch and hand in 40 Speckled Tastyfish to Riggle Bassbait in Booty Bay wins and can choose this or the https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=19970. Tastyfish are found in special swirling schools which only spawn during the hours of the competition and have a "shelf life" so you can't just keep 40 in stock and hand them in next week. You will only catch the Tastyfish if you land a cast inside the school, which can take multiple casts. I bind my fishing skill to middle mouse to speed this up a bit.

My advice would be to set your hearthstone in Booty Bay before the competition starts and find yourself a quiet place on the coast, without many competitors. Note that the Tastyfish pools do not spawn on Jaguero Isle.

Then, try and maintain your distance from the other people fishing - don't share a school of fish unless you absolutely have to. Move in the opposite direction from the majority when your schools dry up. Carrot on a stick and other riding speed boots may be useful - increases to fishing skill are not, unless you are under the required level for STV fishing.

It could take many weeks before you are successful, so don't give up! Each time you try you'll get a better feel for where the best locations are.

Druid aquatic form adds 50% swim speed, so there's no reason for a druid to get this trinket, unless he or she just wants to look like a fish.

An extremely handy trinket if you're questing under water. You'll practically never will have to get to the air as your breath will fill up as soon as you activate this trinket. Furthermore, no difficult combinations are required to shift in or out this form as any casting or attacking will do that for you. This is actually an advantage, as you can, for example, cast Charge in this form. By the time your mob is dead, looted and skinned the 5 second CD will be done. Saves you helluva lot time. And, of course - it looks really cool :-)

P.S.
If you're really eager to win - try a day where something important happens IRL. A grand football match, a catholic day, something like that. It actually DOES make a difference. Believe me.

Another tip for winning this is to have a guildmate help you out in finding Tastyfish pools to fish. While you're on one, they run up the coast finding the next pool. If the area is busy, they can even pretend to fish the pool to keep others away (but land the hook just outside or keep re-casting so they don't take anything from it).

I still use this at 70 on my Paladin when grinding Motes of Water from Shimmerscale Eeels and never having to resurface.

Just won this today. It's interesting to note, if you are a rogue, you can stealth and then use this trinket, which will NOT break stealth. Useful for underwater afk :)

Ok, there is a very easy way to get a piece of armor that lets you breath underwater, without having to be a level 20+ Druid, and without having to try time and time again to win. Its called a Deep-Diving Helmet, and you make it with Engineering, but you do need a skill level of 230 to make it, and it is cloth which means any class can use it. It is a lot better than the Hook of the Master Angler, because it gives about 69 armor, 2 +stat bonuses, and you can fight while using it. In fact, the only reason to use Hook of the Master Angler if you are able to make a Deep-Diving Helmet, is if you want to look like a fish, which is pretty trivial to spend so much time or money trying to get it.:)

I got this today, it's a lot of fun to use in any pvp situation involving water. It can be used in combat and does not break on damage. So if a warlock tries to dot you and swim away, you can just go fish and run him down. I think a unique trinket beats +15 fishing any day as far as rewards go.

This item is part of the Stranglethorn Vale Fishing Competition. Which takes place every Sunday between 14:00 and 16:00 Server time.

These are the items that can be won if you are the first person to hand in 40 Speckled Tastyfish to Riggle Bassbait in Bootybay.

Once someone has won the fishing competition, you can still hand in your remaining Speckled Tastyfish to Jang in Bootybay. (repeatable quest)

Here's a warning for anyone who wins this trinket, anyone who participated in the competition (Of the opposite faction) will likely expess their hatred towards you (in the form of fireballs, bullets, etc.) if you use this trinket to swim around in their pool of tastyfish

I've been teying to get this trink for a long time now and after a couple changes to my strategy I was able to get it easily(sort of).

1. Wait till 60. Epic mounts make this much easier.

2. If you are a hunter like me, bust Aspect of the Cheetah. I beat people to new swarms a few times by not having mount up.

3. If there are lots of people in the zone dont start just outside BB or all the way at the top of the zone, fishermen and gankers bunch up there at the start. Try a little south of Grom Gol and head south to BB. When you hit BB, run to the eastern shore and start up there.

4. Remember that the pools spawn randomly. I got half my fish by running past people that were running past me, meanwhile this druid that was tailin me would see the people and figure there was no more pools that way.

5. Remember that the fish dont spawn in inland waters, off islands, or in BB.

6. BRING A POSSE!. The horde are gank crazy in STV already, and the contest makes it worse. I had my 60 mage and 60 warrior homies running D for me and I couldnt have done it without them(YZZI AND RUDISH FTW!)

6.Pay attention. I fished oily blackmouth schools twice accidentally.

7. If you dont make it back to BB(SET YOUR HEARTH THERE) by 35 minutes or so, you are probably screwed.

8.After someone wins, keep fishin anyway. Fishing is a pain to level and at least this way you (if you are above 225) get rare fishing gear out of it:

I just won the contest for a second time to get the pole, but in my opinion the trinket is way better for underwater fights and quests. If you win, go for the trinket, unless I'm mistaken at the moment there is nothing an extra +10 fishing will do to help you. The trinket on the other hand has saved me many times from dieing due to a mob netting me or freezing me under water. As long as I have it equiped, it can be turned on with no cool down or limit, and begins to rapidly increase my breath bar until I'm stuck by an attack.

I just posted about this whole deal if you look up the other reward. BOTTOM LINE: If you wanna get this item, be prepared to put in a lot of Sundays, and round up all your lvl 70 friends to protect you. This event is a GANKFEST on the PVP servers, and is in DIRE need of restructuring! You can have your fishing pumped to the very max & still not win, due to the amount of backstabbing going on between the factions. On my server it's more the horde bringing twinks and having their friends kill the other fishermen than the alliance, but I'm sure this varies. Good Luck & See you at the graveyard! LOL

I won the fishing competition back in September '06 on Silvermoon server, and this was the reward I chose. How to win has already been gone over pretty well, so I'll skip that.

Let me just say that as a Tauren warrior, underwater quests, underwater gathering, and pretty much all things to do with water were always a pain. No more. I can stay underwater as long as I want to- not having to worry about drowing is so HUGE. Underwater farming and questing is now a breeze. In addition I can get across large bodies of water much more swiftly, which makes travel and exploration so much easier.

While the fish form does break the moment you do pretty much anything other than swim, the cooldown is only 3 seconds, which allows you to turn back into a fish at will (and thus avoid drowning). Sometimes being attacked does break the trinket's effect... just keep swimming, and when those three seconds are up, turn back into a fish and get away.

Oh, and did I mention that this trinket turns you into a uniquely-colored freaking FRENZY FISH? With this trinket, no matter where you go, I can virtually guarantee you that the players you are swimming circles around have NEVER seen anything like you. Druids with their Seal form are still somewhat faster than you, but they aren't nearly as cool.

In short, who cares about the fishing pole! Get this trinket!

i won the hook this weekend...i love it. it's very helpful when you're crossing large bodies of water. plus...come on, you turn into a fish! how cool is that!

i'm sure i'll be trying again next sunday for the pole, but the hook was my main goal :)

Some people above said various speeds. It is a 25% increase to speed. If you don't believe me then click on the text describing what it does up at the very top, it links you to the spell details which says 25. Just so you know, this does stack with swim speed potion, and you can drink it while you are in fish form.

You said that u can only catch one rare fish in a day. I personally have cought 2 Keefer's Angelfish, and 1 Brownell's Blue Striped Racer in one contest. You might say i was lucky, but still my point is you can catch 2 of the same fish.

i won the fishing contest today on the garthitos realm. i am lvl 43 hunter with lvl 300 fishing. i was using a big iron fishing pole. this was my FIRST TIME doing the tournament, but i have fished at "floating wreckage" piles in STV many many times, so i knew exactly wat i need to do. about 20-30 sec after i turned in the quest there were 2 ppl, 1 alli and 1 horde that came in to turn the quest in as well, but a tad bit too late. i got the trinket because my fishing pole is already pretty good. also i got very lucky and caught a rare fish as well. it was the rare fish that u turn in to get the fishing hat, which i love. i caught 100 tastyfish over the whole day, and i won the tourny in about 20-23 min roughly, i had my first 20 within 8 min. then went back to get more hoping for a mr. pinchy or rare fish. if any1 wants to make a horde character on garthitos and talk to me (curiousgeorg) ill be happy to give u some more specifics about the spot i fished at. ill try again next week for the fishing pole, and after i get the pole i will let others experience the joy of winning the intense tournament. and to let u all know, i was fishing with a lvl ? alli next to me for 10 min, but we were to busy fishing for him to stop and gank me luckly.

I tried like 5 times and i lost.Theres a stupid orc with all the gear every week there screwing me up...
i went on my horde to talk with her and she just said its fun to screw up people.One time she even killed me. She is a level 70 with a epic. I am a 66 small gnome with a epic next time ill have my gnome friends tag along and if she kills me I will gank her all day and never leave her alone till she stops competing

This trinket is very helpful for rogues. I won the tourney at lvl 50 and chose the trinket since I was not high enough skill lvl fishing to use the pole, which at first I thought was a bad move but later it turned out correct for my class. Many of the lockpicking skill leveling areas can be found underwater, and this trinket makes it so much easier to locate these locked boxes. There is a 30 sec cooldown when you first equip the trinket, but it can be used numerous times after that without worrying about drowning.

I won this item 9 days ago.

I were in 3-4 tournaments, I have never won it, but today I were lucky. I had 40 fishes in 24 mins, its a bit qiuckly i think :)
no rare fishes, no1 were trying to attack me, got 70lvl and 358 skill in fishing, so no prob with it.

But, when i tried this trinket, increase speed wasnt so visible, but np, prize is prize and fish form is nice :)

Just won this last sunday. Tried 2 weeks in a row and got it easily on the 2nd try... when i turned it in 3 horde ran outta the inn to turn theirs in (on my server horde usually win this, i was the 1st alliance to win in 3 weeks or more...

Anyway i have a few tips to win this, like the above says "set your homeport to booty bay" if i hadnt i wouldnt have won... also i agree DO NOT fish on the southeast beach theres players everywhere that WILL gank. I reccomend fishing skill above 250 and these fish spawn on ALL beaches inland so fish on one of the northwest beaches (i didnt get ganked once.) its not so much ur skill its mostly where u fish, if ur anywhere above 250 youll be fine. get this trinket dont get the pole, it looks sweet and its extremely helpful... the pole isnt so much but u can get it ur 2nd win, so good luck fishing guys (blizz needs to make a title for this) "Master Angler" lol just a thought.

I finally won a tourney after much frustration.

This trinket is great fun! Pretty much useless except for the entertainment factor. Since aquiring it, I have found many uses for it (none of them actually necessary, but extremely enjoyable for the novelty.) It's great for swimming to/around the Sunken Temple, Earthsong Falls in Mara, and I even went back to BFD to swim around with it.

It has a 30s Cooldown once equiped, so if you are under water, make sure you equip it soon enough before your breath runs out.

If you attack, cast, or try to pick Stranglekelp, etc. you will switch back to normal form, but you can recast before your breath runs out. As long as you are in Fish Form, breathing is not a problem. When you switch out, watch your breath. I was swimming off Stranglethorn Vale and found some elite Coral Sharks. I wanted to see what they dropped, the battle lasted just shorter than my breath so as soon as soon as the shark died, so did I. I was able to run back and loot his corpse--they don't drop anything good by the way. :(

I have found it useful on a couple of occations, like when multiple players of the other faction decide to gank you. Assuming you don't get totally pwned in the first 3 seconds, you can jump in the water, fish-out and swim away faster than they can persue, and stay under water longer than they can. It could save your life--it has mine on more than one occasion.

P.S. If you are a Horde player, this is the best reward (in my opinion) since you can get Nat Pagle's Extreme Angler FC-5000 which has slightly less +Fishing, but more DPS. ;)

its quite possible to win the intire event with a lvl 5

thats what u need for 150 fishing skill +75 bauble and ur rollin

go to westfall and follow the sea, u come to the little island with trolls on them, way north in stv... no mobs here

island/area has 8 pools spawning, 2 are seemingly bugged, but theres a trick to getting em and when u stand in the correct spot, it wont matter..

it took 27 min to get 40 fish, and tbh my intention was never to win it, i just wanted the lucky fishing hat (im lvl 19 rouge)

as long as u get the area somewhat for urself, u will always have some pool to fish from

I have just won this, I am level 40 so you don’t need to be level 60 to win and use this item. (done it 1st week of patch 1.10 so might have been different before this patch, I don’t know). Is a pretty cool effect, you swim faster and don’t have to worry about breathing, however I would dare say if you’re a Druid you probably be better picking the +35 fishing pole as your main prize.

Took me 4 weeks to win this, coming close in the 2nd week and being a 15 fish short in the 3rd week by time the winner was called. I wait a few weeks and try again as I would like the Fishing Pole now ;-)

Won this on my server after 4-5 weeks and it was really worth it for me. I have been having too much fun with it. Sure getting the pole would have been cool, but it was not as cool as say, this. But needless to say, I still want the pole too.

I love this trinket, just got mine too ^_^ it helps to be able to fish far away from BB and hop a wyv from grom gol down to booty. I guess that gives us horde a slight advantage if you're strategic about it, since most alliance atleast wouldn't want to fish too much so far away from BB because they'd want to get back to town ASAP when they get their 40. now that I have this thing, I want there to be water everywhere! I propose a pond by the gates to Org so that I and other gilled bretheren may swim around showing off our fancy fishyness.

despite of the glitches like schools in shallow water or without an animation, fished up 40, hearthed, turned it in... was lucky, didn't even expect to win... but... chose this trink, the swim speed is kinda slow but it's still pretty cool. i still have to win the fishing pole now... And by the way I also fished up a rare fish-and got a lucky fishing hat for it.

I won the first Fishing Tourney on the Gorgonnash server and selected this as my reward. To use, you have to be deep enough to swim. The cooldown is insanely fast, so if you break the surface an lose the effect, you can re-enable it quickly and swim on. Also makes it handy for fighting underwater. You can pop into normal form to cast spells or attack and then switch to fish form instantly before your breath meter runs out. The Master Angler effect is not broken if you're attacked while in this form.

You are still affected by fatigue in this form, so you can still die if you swim beyond the outer ocean limit.

While in this form, you look like one of the frenzies you find in ZG - frilly fins and big teeth.

I've tested the movement speed against a Druid in aquatic form and you're a bit slower. Since Aquatic Form is a 50% boost in swim speed, Master Angler looks to be about 30-40%.

All in all, it's a very nifty trinket.

When you do something that makes your hands glow for a while, such as casting a blessing, the tips of your fins will be glowing if you change into fish form.
