This is used for the quest 'The Binding'. You'll get this from 'Gakin the Darkbinder'; who can not show you how to control a voidwalker until you overcame one.

Simply go down the stairs, you'll see the entrance to a catacomb enter it. Then you'll see a purple sign on the floor. Stand near it, or on it. Use the item and within 10 seconds a level 10 Voidwalker will be spawned in front of you.

All you have to do now is kill the voidwalker and return to Gakin the Darkbinder. However; to my level 15 Warlock this wasn't a walk in the park. It could have been my (rather worthless) gear tough.

Once you completed the quest you'll learn how to summon a Voidwalker, at the cost of a Soul Shard. Voidwalkers are good for tanking with buckets of health and some nice Damage Per Second.
