If this doesn't work for you, you might try buying Essence of Water and getting them transmuted. That's probably the easiest way since EoW are always on the AH for a reasonable price.

A warlock specced with Intensity and a Paladin can duo these and clear the whole place before respawns. Have the Paladin use Concentration Aura, tag 4-7 elementals (as much as you can grab running around without losing them) with Curse of Elements, and once they're on you, use Hellfire and have the Paladin heal you. You can easily get 5-12 essence per hours.

I've spent several hours farming these off the Dust Stormers in Silithus. The drop rate varied, but I was able to get about 4-8 essence per hour as a shadow spec'd priest. Depending on your server, you may have to compete with others for the mobs - I however never had a problem.

I don't know how readable this will be but here's a little diagram of the transmute circle that is possible with elemental essences. The main circle is Earth to Water to Air to Fire and back to Earth. The two branches are Life to Earth to Life and Water to Undeath to Water.

Dont bother trying to find the Cyclone warrios or any of the rarer mobs because they take too long to find, your better off farming the dust stormers. I farmed there for about 20 minutes and managed to get 4 essences and a Krol Blade! And the dust stormers give rep with the waterlords

The best class to farm essence of air is mages, they can AoE atleast 6-12 at a time. With 2 points in magic attunement and Ice barrier they will be hitting you for 30 damage a hit thats after they break your ice barrier.

2 drops in 65 kills tonight. The drop rate isn't as bad as previously stated. I'm going to try to grind out about 4 more, will update stats afterwards.

2.. now at 140 kills. Ok, ok, the drop rate IS as bad as people say. I guess I just got lucky early on. Good luck to anyone needing alot of these.

i got the essence after around 30 kills, but there are quite a lot and are easy to farm (i still didn't get intellect on weapon after 600 researchers :P)

Are essences still in high demand now that Burning Crusade is out? I don't think I really should spend the time to get the transmutes for these items, as I don't come across these in the Outlands. I'll have to check my AH to see the prices, but it would surprise me if there is a demand for these, unless they are connected to a class quest.

1. Quest series starts with "Doctor Theolen Krastinov, the Butcher" from a ghost NPC right outside the door to Scholomance. There are two ghosts and they are kind of hard to see, you can easily run by them without noticing. Speak to the lady and she will tell you a story first, then you will be able to get the quest. There are two other quests in the series that require you to return to Scholomance and kill other bosses. Upon completion of the line you will get a trinket that allows you to see the rest of the ghosts of Caer Darrow.

2. Equip the trinket and go to where the blacksmithing building is in Caer Darrow (it is inside the walls, not by the docks). There is a dwarf there who sells the transmute formula. He also sells the recipe for Major Mana Potion and some blacksmithing plans.

After the patch they are now supposed to drop in Silithus from Dust Stormers. A guildee farmed them for 2 hours but didn't manage to find any. He did aquire about 8 Breath of Winds though which at least made the trip worthwhile.

I've been farming silithus non-stop for a few weeks now, a few hours a day...

The whirlwind invaders ARE a part of the elemental invasion. Their spawn is connected to the lvl 60 elite mob The Windreaver.
You will be notified in your chat history when he spawns!

My experience leads me to believe that he spawns almost on a daily basis, though often in the early day.

Whirlwind invaders ARE alot easier to kill, so go for those mainly - avoid killing the windreaver, since he puts an end to all whirlwind invaders...

A Silithus must-know: Keep an eye out for Hurricanian. He looks like a whirlwind invader. He is guaranteed to drop a green + breath/essence if youre lucky.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people become belligerent over drop rates for the uncommon materials and patterns needed to make rare and epic gear. If these things were easy to make, they wouldn't be rare or epic. If the materials were easy to gather, everyone would have the end product. There would be no challenge, everyone would have amazing gear, and there would be no reason to work for anything. I'm glad there are stupid-hard tasks to complete in this game. I'm happy that it's actually noteworthy for such-and-such guild to have what's-the-name that is capable of crafting X item or performing Y enchant from patterns and formulae that take a lot of effort or luck just to gain, material gathering aside.

I guess that part of the problem is Thottbot. When you can easily look up how to get something, you expect to be able to do so. It's like the people who beg for money so they can train in everything that's available at their new level: they feel that they're entitled to it just because it's there, that the difficulty involved is somehow not intentional or something that needs to be "fixed."

IMHO, it should take the efforts of many to craft one Shifting Cloak.

Theres a very simple concept you need to understand about why it may or may not drop. Contrary to grammer school logic, 5% chance doesn't mean that you will see 5 drops out of 100 kills. Infact, you could kill somthing a million times and never see it once.

If I flip a coin 100 times and every single time it comes up heads...what are the odds is going to be tails on the next flip?

People have this weird idea that if its a 10% chance that one out of ten times it will happen. Thats not true...statistics are alot more complicated then that. It could drop 1000 times in a row, and then not drop over the next 9000 times....that makes it 1000/10000 and a 10% chance of dropping...but not 1 out of every 10 drops was that item. In fact if you look at a span of the first 2000 drops, it was a 50% chance, but over a span of 10000 drops, it was a 10% chance. Does that make sense?

My point is this, while it might be a 5% chance of dropping you could see one drop every other guy or not at all. Its the same reason why some people get every single roll in a run, while others don't get any. Its just random, and random means exactly what its supposed to mean: Having no specific pattern, purpose, or objective.

The % of drop that is represented here is supposed to represent the chance of it dropping over an infinite number of drops. Over a span of so many kills, that % could be completely different based on the random factor.

Statistics are not an easy subject. Thats why im a junior in college taking a class on them. Not a freshman in highschool...

I farmed the 55-57 stormers for a little more than 2 hours. I got 4 essences, 5 elemental airs, and 10 breath of wind (which sell pretty well in the auction house). Didn't see the boss though.

I was up one day nice and early grindin essence of air in silithus the spot in the north west. When i got there there was around 10 cyclone warriors and 10 dust stormers. This seems a bit strange as people have said theyr very few cyclone warriors.

Later that day i went back to silithus and there wer NO cyclone warriors ... hmmm

I then noticed that earlier there had been a weird black portal thing in the middle of the mobs... which was no longer there...

anyone know anything about this?

Btw i grinded about 6 cyc. warriors before recieving a essence of air :D

Been farming for about 2 days killed approx 100 each day i got about 4 EoA per hour and 10 Elemental Air and 5ish Breath of Wind... Drop rates can be on and off i could be farming for 30 mins and feel like its never guna drop or i could kill 5 and get lucky realy depends. Great money off this but it takes a alot of time and luck. by the way during the "elemental invasion" there are whrilling invaders or w/e they are called and apprently they drop EoA too.. imo more mobs to kill!

I originally came for 4, but i got them in 50 minutes. Nothing else to do, so I just kept farming. Lucky for me, there was no competition whatsoever after the first 30 minutes or so.

Dual boxed my shadow priest and survival hunter. Started off taking 3 at a time with ease, but I decided to focus on mobs to save mana, and was dropping them under 25 seconds each. Hope this helps.

Dust stormer info--

Mages can aoe Dust Stormers SO EASILY...just put on dampen magic, and they will hit for 1 DMG!

I AOE 10 at a time, ive gotten 4 airs in under 1 hour, 1 green, several elemental air, and breath of wind.

Core of elements also drop off the stormers, they sell for 16g for 30, i can get 90 in one hour.

Using my 60 shaman, here's how I farm Dust Stormers for essences:

1) Grab as much nature resistance as you can before you leave. Also grab at least 2-3 stacks of food and water.
2) Upon reaching NW silithus, buff rockbiter or windfury. I personally prefer the consistency of rockbiter. Around 300dmg a hit with TUF.
3) Stand in between 2 dust stormers that are no more than 50 yards apart. Ideally, try to find 3.
4) Start off with flame shock. As the mob comes towards you, put down stoneskin, nature resist and mana spring totems. Replace mana spring totem with water spirit trinket if its up.
5) Do NOT put down fire totems as the lightning shield will kill them off making them mana inefficient.
6) Reapply flame shock once it runs out. Use frost shock when u get clearcasting or if you have elemental mastery.
7) Once you kill the dust stormer, heal up and pull the second dust stormer into your totems.
8) Repeat if you have a third one in range. My 2 min totems usually run out after the third one.

Using this method, I can farm about 5 pairs of dust stormers before having to eat/drink. It's not super fast but you'll be able to kill about 300 dust stormers in 4 hours. On average, it will yield about 5-6 essences. If you're lucky, you'll be able to find the whirling invaders and farm those.

Oh... one additional tip... get a good guild that talks a lot of crap on their chat. It's gonna be long and boring.

as a fire mage I can kill them very fast
mage armor & dampen magic and you only take ~50 damage from them...no need for frost nova kiting..go all out dps
sometimes they died imediately after the pyro - fireball - fireblast opener & DOTs if I critted.
Didn't even have much downtime, drinking only 2-3 times between the evocation cooldown
In 3 hours I had 90 core of elements, 11 essence of air, 3 greens etc.

On my rogue they were totally annoying, had to heal after each >.>

for melees they are bad because they deal nature damage that isn't reduced by armor and can't be dodged, parried or blocked

Yep, market has all but crashed on these- they're selling on Drenden for under 2 per, just bought a couple stacks of 10 for 13G each. They might readjust these in a later patch, but for now it means some of the nice agi chants, at least for twinks, just got a lot cheaper.

/agree, dust stormers are the mobs to grind for these. There are tons of them in NW corner they die quick and the respawn is FAST. I needed some breath of wind for a sword on my 45 rogue so I took my 70 hunter over to Silithus.
I decided to keep count;

60 minutes 149 stormers killed, 9 breath of wind, 10 elemental air and 41 essence of air.

I'm not much of a mathematician but that's just under 25% or so drop rate. It's possible that more than one dropped of the same mob, I wasn't that diligent during the collection process.

Pure luck? Maybe. I killed over 150 Dust Stormers in a course of roughly 1 and a half hour, not a single Essence of Air. Got some Breath of Winds and Elemental Airs. I then furiously moved to seek for a Cyclone Warrior and the very first one dropped Essence of Air. Guess which will I farm from now on?

you need to be a masochist to farm those. Those elementals simply won't drop essence of air just because the drop rate is way too nerfed. Additionally these are the most non-elite uber elementals you'll find in game and keep in mind that 95% of the times they won't drop a thing, nothing at all, not even 1 copper..jeezus Blizzard you really give elemental leatherworkers a hard time.

I am 57 hunter and a friend told me about farming breath of wind so i decide to grind in Silithus. I get there im about half way to lvl 58 and start grinding and drop on of these EOA to my suprise i found out there valued at about 18g so after a few hours of farming and grinding im 2 boxes out of 58 i just stuck up 7 of these on AH and 12 Breath Of Winds ... Good farming if u ask me.. well we will see how they sell

These things are one of the last things I would ever want to farm.. because there is no wiggle room for elemental shamnas to kill them other than using frost shock and fire totems and the totems usually get taken out by that overpowered shield of theirs.. completely requires wasting mana and they hit way too hard compared to the toxic horrors in felwood. THEY SUCK FOR FARMING and that is an understatment.

Supersized :-] My elemental leatherworking rogue (level 51) was in the need of these for Stormshroud and other stuff,
so I took the pain up and flew to Sillithus. Started to kill some Stormers (North-west).
Was very suprised to see the first 10 mobs drop 4 Essences. So, I'm a happy rogue :-)

(Edit): Perhaps I was lucky in the start, but took me 15 minutes to grind the 6 essences I needed,
very much better than back when you had to skip sk00l and sit all day to get that, must remember that.

The price of all essences these has gone down dramatically with the release of the 2.1 patch. On my server, essences of air generally only go for slightly above 1g each now, all all the other essences go for even less.

my result of the last 2:30hrs

47 dust stormers killed - nothing
147 whirling invaders killed - 5 Breath of air, 9 elemental air, 5 essence of air

the first four essences of the invaders were pretty evenly spaced ~every 20th, the last one took about 60 kills

this is a joke ive just been to silithus to farm 2 essence of air for an enchant. no sign of the warriors and killes at least 50 stormers and got nowt. no essence of air no trash nothing.

every single one of these mobs had nothing on em.

this needs to be fixed coz i aint paying 12-15g for these.

Dont bother farming these it will probably be quicker to farm gold and just buy em.

Just spent the last 5 hours grinding Dust Stormers in Silithus, killed over 400 of them and not a single Essence of Air drop.. that's right NONE at all.. I came out with 6 Breath of Winds and 9 Elemental Airs in the end.

Way to put people off crafting their own gear blizzard; could have just ran MC and had a better chance of getting a bloodfang piece drop in the time I spent grinding there.

One day i went to Silithus to get some EoA`s to a enchant and maby earn some money. I killed in about 20min, then one EoA dropped. About 20 minutes after, another dropped. Then, on the next kill, another one dropped :D Yes!

I was at lvl 58 then i think, im a hunter.

Have killed a grand total of 514 dust stormers and have gotten 17 breaths(far from 10% as alla claims more like 3.3%) 20 elemental airs(also far from 10% more like 3.5%) and 5 essence of air(not 2% more like 1%).

Also these elements are DAMN hard to kill (im a rogue) they have this lightning shields that does so that when I hit it there's a chance for me to be damaged for ~110 damage. Also their damage is good, a combination of instant cast spells and normal hitting. They are immune against poison and also their armor and hp are really high. Blizzard. If you are going to nerf the drops. PLEASE nerf the damn mobs too!. I can kill 6 regular mobs before I need to eat while I can only kill 2-3 of these.

It's a big hazzle to grind these!

The Dust Stormers only do magic damage. (inc. their punches)

If you use dampen magic (which means you have a mage with you) you can AoE them 5 or 6 at a time with little risk.

I grinded on these guys with my Priest from 57-60 and got 32 EoAs, around 120 BoWs and around 90 Elemental Airs. It took about 20 hours to grind those three levels... No blues or epics dropped until I went and killed some random humanoid out there and BAM a Myrmidon's Signet. =)

I'm a holy spec pally (Current level 65) and have been farming these since level 53 and all I can say is "Rags To Riches". They are a goldmine if you are patient. Example: The first time I farmed them (after reading these posts) I got a drop rate of about 3%...kinda low. The second time (next day), it was 7.85%. I went back yesterday, the first hour 3 dropped, Windreaver appeared along with the Whirling Invaders and in 40 minutes I got an additional 11. They sale for about 20g on my server.

Anyone know where you can pick this up currently? Or is it from the unfinished Silithus zone. I've seen many wind and rock elementals there, but a GM told me Silithus isn't finished. After you kill things in Silithus they don't drop anything atm.

Camped by chinese farmerbots all day on my realm. I report them all and they eventually dissappear.. but 2 days later another green BoE geared clown without a rank, guild, trinkets and a default petname is there again. Hard to fight, but keeping them banned makes it worthless for them to continue and I hope that I'll be the victor one day.

Was about 1% for me, perhaps a bit less even.

Was at it for three hours, got all three essences I needed, along with lots of elemental air, breath of wind, ton of core of elements, one green and one blue, nice level51 cloth shoulders.

So quite frustrating, yes. But there don't seem to be a better place for it.

Farmed these things for 2.5 hours for 1 breath of wind. Need 12 EoA to make the Stormshroud set for my rogue...and it took about 12-13 hours to farm out the patterns for that...Blizz you need to do something to make it viable for those of us who want to make our own gear.

This Drops in silithus now, from dust stormers. my results place a roughly 1/100 drop chance on them, but they also drop breath of wind about 1/20, which is a nice bonus.

Well the fact is you get approx 1 every 30 minutes if you go constant killing them, i ALWAYS get 4 of them when raiding for approx 2 hours. If there is a Demon happening it goes up to approx 5% droprate... well those who wait will be rewarded!

With the release of patch 2.1, the elemental Essence drops have been significantly increased in their drop rate. Yesterday I farmed for nearly two hours to only get to EoAs. Today after the patch went live, I went in and in less than forty-five minutes I was able to obtain another TEN ESSENCES. This was off the Dust Howlers in Silithus and no elemental invasion had taken place.

luckily I'm a tauren hunter, so with AotW I get +60 nature resist, 10 nature resist racial ability and with a druid (with improved MotW) that's 107 nature resists without requiring special gear. That makes it easy to farm these as most of their magical attacks are nature based.

The drop rate seems low, but last night for about 4 or 5 hours, I think my roomie and I who were farming them got extremely lucky. Ended up finding maybe around 10 elemental air, 16 breath of wind, and 6 essence of air all combined when we were done. We were farming the air for future enchants for ourselves. :)

We also found additional items on the guys. So, worked out well, but like I said, think we got really lucky. In last hour the drops dropped to a crawl, then nothing. But was fun.

It seems that the drop rate may have been nerfed slightly this latest patch (the one in April). I've been here for 3 hours now and have gotten a grand total of 2 elemental airs and 2 breaths of wind - and no essence of air.

i got one on first try from a cyclone warrior, then i went to those dust stormers with the 1,89% dropchance, 2 hours later i still had nothing from those, DONT GO DUST STORMERS ! THEY SUCK!

I haven't noticed any changed, increased dropchance, atleast not for the Dust Stormers.
Just killed 100 of those, lootet 1 single Essence. >.<

Farmed ten of these for my Robe of the Archmage. The first three came at regular intervals of 1 per 50 kills. After that they got kind of streaky, in total I ended up killing 236 Dust Stormers for 10 Essences.

Just finished farming 10 Essence of Air for Robe of the Archmage. Took exactly 432 kills, no pause, no DC.

Droprate is nowhere near the 24% shown here.

Exact drops were :

Essence of Air x 10
Elemental Air x 23
Breath of the Wind x 20
Pattern : Heavy Scorpid Belt x1
Gallent Flamberge of the Boar x1
Impenetrable Gauntlets of the Eagle x1

Wow Classic can confirm 29% drop rate is a lie. I have killed like 50 and not one has dropped. Not sure where these results come from but they are wrong.

Pattern Frostweave Robe, green ring , green 1h sword and Thorium Lockbox.

Classic time wasting. Better farm more valuable mobs that dropping gold/cloth(felcloth) and buy Essence.
P.s. 1st Essence dropped from 91 kill.

Yeah don't know where this drop rate is coming from , 60 Kills zero essence. Can we get a reset or something these numbers seem pretty off.

For reference (in classic) it took me about 3-4 hours to farm 8 essence, while Windreaver was up. I also got 8 BoE Greens with a level range of 52 to 55.

I wouldnt bother farming these, just farm gold in Silithus. If a mob comes along that drops these then yeah go for it but its so much quicker just farming gold.

These are selling for 12 gold each on my server.

A stack of 20 Chair de ver des sables is selling for 24 gold and takes no time to farm.
