Today we will take a look at the Healing balance in Castle Nathria at the end of the first week of Mythic Castle Nathria and the second week of Shadowlands Season 1 .The second week of every season always marks the beginning of the Mythic Race,
which you can follow here
, and we see the results of
class tuning
. For this analysis we will use data provided by
Warcraft Logs Heroic Castle Nathria statistics
.
Warcraft Logs' Castle Nathria Statistics Page
Disclaimers and Source
The data for this article was taken from the
Castle Nathria Statistics Page on Warcraft Logs
under the Shadowlands Season 1 partition. Unlike we did in our
DPS analysis
, we will also take a closer look at the raw participation of each spec, as many aspects of healing can't be measured with raw throughput numbers.
The idea of this article is to give a perspective of the state of healing balance for Castle Nathria in Shadowlands Season 1 after the tuning changes that happened
last week
in preparation for Mythic opening. For that, we will look into all healing specs, giving an outlook at all healing specializations in Castle Nathria.
We say perspective, as there are inherent biases in looking at the data this way.
Specs that are considered underpowered are generally played less and tend to appear weaker than they are actually.
This happens as many performance-oriented players will tend to play the strongest spec or class, increasing even further the gap between top and bottom specs.
The balance between specs is very delicate and will likely change throughout Season 1, as player acquire more gear, different classes and specs tend to perform better with more secondaries.

Healing Spec Analysis for Week 2
To better understand the placements and popularity of each spec in Castle Nathria, we've asked our Healer Class Writers to explain more the current state of their specs during these early weeks.
Restoration Druid
Although Restoration Druids have been absent in Race to World First compositions, we're still a strong throughput healer that remains quite competitive. We're a versatile healer that not only excels in sustained healing scenarios but also have a fair number of strong cooldowns including the new
Convoquer les esprits
to respond to incoming burst damage.
We can put up similar numbers to Restoration Shamans, but where we struggle is bringing some sort of unique utility that isn't replicated by a Druid off-spec or another healer. For raids this typically comes in the form of our lack of raid-wide damage reduction cooldown and passive damage contribution. Throughput healers also tend to struggle to compete in an absorb meta. Currently Discipline Priest are able to nullify entire raid mechanics with
Carapace spirituelle
making it difficult for other healers to contribute in these windows.
Mistweaver Monk
Mistweavers have been getting on the low end of the throughput spectrum for the past few expansions, and at the start of Shadowlands, the trend is continuing. Judging by the data above, Mistweavers are towards the bottom half of healer throughput metrics. However, the key thing to look at here is the gap between healing specs is not that large. With the majority of healing specializations within 5% of each other, Mistweaver is not lagging behind as much as they have in the past. This is good news going into the first tier, as Mistweavers will be able to keep pace with Druids and Holy Priests, their main throughput rivals.
The one thing the above charts will not show is raid cooldown effectiveness. With the majority of major damage events in the raid this tier being ones you can stack up as a raid, such as
Consommer
on
Destructeur affamé
, those classes with damage reduction cooldowns are seeing much more play in Mythic raids.
,
Mot de pouvoir : Barrière
, and
Maîtrise des auras
are all strong which pushes those specializations above Mistweavers currently. There is a silver lining as Sun King’s Salvation is a very strong Mistweaver fight, as we have very good single target healing, and with some external mana cooldowns like
Innervation
, we are more than likely the strongest class for that fight.
Holy Paladin
Holy Paladins are performing quite well in raids despite having lower raw throughput than some other healers (Notably Resto Shamans) due to their utility,
Bénédiction de protection
,
Aura de dévotion
, Passive Damage and strong raid cooldowns are all a part of what allow paladins to be valuable assets to any raid team.
Bénédiction de protection
is useful in encounters such as
Altimor le Veneur
,
Fangepoing
, and Stone legion generals.
Aura de dévotion
is a mandatory raid buff in most large raid groups, being able to heal while doing damage through
Puissance du croisé
/
Frappe du croisé
can help to meet challenging DPS checks at lower gear levels.
Guide de lumière
is incredibly valuable due to high tank damage in Castle Nathria. Combine this with spells such as
Maîtrise des auras
,
Courroux vengeur
and
Glas divin
/
Bénédiction cendrée
Paladins have a strong cooldown kit allowing them to help smooth out rougher edges of many encounters. Despite Nathria being dominated by shamans, Paladins have a suite of utility making them invaluable even if they have slightly lower raw throughput in some situations.
Discipline Priest
While underrepresented during heroic, Discipline has exploded in representation during the Race to World First with most guilds bringing the spec along to middle and later encounters. The return of mass absorb effects through
Carapace spirituelle
is a big part of this, giving the raid substantial absorbs to smooth out incoming damage. This was particularly critical on
Fangepoing
where crashing into pillars could deal upwards of 70% of player's health in damage but when
Carapace spirituelle
achieved near-full coverage, health pools only moved by 10-20% making it much easier for healers to contribute damage during the burn phase without worrying about players getting killed by the follow up roar.
Discipline's passive damage and damage reduction are still very strong, especially when this raid is very favorable towards stacking for mechanics ensuring
Mot de pouvoir : Barrière
's strong value. While optimizing your timing can take time, the outcomes speak for themselves as Discipline continues to dominate another raid tier.
Holy Priest
Highly represented during Heroic week, Holy Priest continues to build upon its strengths in Shadowlands. Bringing two powerful raid cooldowns that scale with raid size
Hymne divin
and
Mot sacré : Salut
always dominate the week before Mythic raid release. When it comes to Mythic, Holy has fared quite well, with 2 Holy Priests frequently being brought to the Sun King's Salvation encounter to take advantage of the massive healing bonus that
Esprit gardien
brings along with the synergy it has with the
Ange gardien
talent reducing its cooldown and the
Esprit tenace
potency conduit increasing the duration and healing bonus. This combo makes the Sun King encounter significantly easier on Mythic where you must heal through his
Cape des flammes
in a short period of time lest he wipes the raid.
Outside of that encounter, Holy Priest has been highly represented on early to mid level bosses from guilds racing for World First. Their hefty cooldowns are easy to prioritize, their damage contribution is also quite good, with
Flammes sacrées
dealing very heavy damage, being able to now apply
Mot de l’ombre : Douleur
and also being able to snipe executes on enemies with
Mot de l’ombre : Mort
. While their representation has waned for the World First guilds requiring the most precise compositions possible, Holy Priest still brings a lot to the table and should not be shied away from by fans of the spec who want to push mythic.
Restoration Shaman
Castle Nathria is a perfect mix of fights that favour Restoration Shamans, with almost all of them having the raid stacked, or at least stacked during parts that are relevant for healing, enabling us to make full use of spells such as
Pluie guérisseuse
,
Afflux
and with great windows for
Totem de lien d'esprit
. This means that we can play to the kits fullest potential which enables us to be among the best healing specs when it comes to throughput. We're also back to being good spot healers with
Remous
doing lots of immediate healing on demand.
With the utility being strong as always, providing raid movement through
Totem de bouffée de vent
, a little bit of extra mana with
Totem de vague de mana
, a very strong safety net with
Totem de protection ancestrale
and being good at catching / saving people from certain death: we bring almost anything that you could want including answers for almost any situation. The Sun King's Salvation encounter shows the great versatility that we have, proving that while we're known for being a raid healing focused spec, we can still provide immense single target healing with the correct setup.
The current iteration of Restoration Shaman shines on difficult progress bosses where on top of the rest of the kit
Maîtrise : Soins profonds
kicks in as well. All of this is why you're always seeing 1, sometimes 2 or even 3 Restoration Shamans being brought to the top end guild progress and being the most popular healer across the board of all guilds.
