Professions in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch - What's New and Changing?

Professions are receiving some major changes in the Shadowlands Pre-patch with the addition of Optional Reagents and Relic of the Past as well as the general change in item levels for crafted gear.
General item level changes
With the new change in character levels, crafted gear now has new item levels to match. For example, previously Uncanny combatant gear would be item level 400. Once pre-patch hits, this will be item level 87 in line with other gear at the same level

Essentially, this means no matter your choice of expansion to level through, you will be able to craft appropriate gear for your level throughout that expansion using the profession from that expansion.
Optional Reagents & Relic of the Past
Optional Reagents are a new mechanic for crafting professions allowing crafters to add an item at the point of crafting to change the item level of the final product.
These are made possible through new items called
Relic of the Past
. There are 5 different levels Relic of the Past and they will upgrade (or downgrade) your crafted gear item level depending on the Relic used..
Each of the 3 main armor crafting professions can make a Relic of the Past 1-5 and each expansion for that profession has its own set of relics that require different materials. The Relics are interchangeable once crafted and one can be used anywhere where optional reagents can be applied.

- item level 23 and requires level 15
Relic of the Past II
- item level 33 and requires level 25
Relic of the Past III
- item level 43 and requires level 35
Relic of the Past IV
- item level 56 and requires level 45
Relic of the Past V
- item level 87 and requires level 50
Recipes marked by a green + in the database indicate they can be socketed with a Relic of the Past. You can also

Essences removed for WoD Crafted gear
You can no longer create Essences to upgrade Warlords of Draenor crafted gear. They used to have 6 different stages with the first 3 having unique appearances. These can no longer be crafted due to the removal of essences in pre-patch.
Blizzard is aware of the issue and has stated
"We have plans to reintroduce all the transmogs in a future patch".
