WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-Up
Welcome to the twelvth edition of the WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-up!
If you're new to this series or want to re-visit past posts, you can

My name is
and I’m the lead moderator for the
and the accompanying
. I am also the Support Manager & User Evangelist for
, the Auction House addon suite for World of Warcraft. I hope to cover and showcase some of the interesting topics, discussions, content and guides that have been going on over the last week in the gold making community. Some that you might have missed as a veteran gold maker, or you might be interested in checking out for the first time as a new or aspiring ‘goblin’.
The format will not be that of a traditional guide, but links to further reading with commentary and opinions of my own. I will be looking at the bigger picture, the decision making and thought processes in being a gold maker – rather than a step by step instructional list. As the saying goes, “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”.
team has been hard at work for close to 18 months, today more information on TradeSkillMaster 4 has been revealed!
Over the past few weeks we’ve kept you all in suspense. If you’ve been paying attention then you know by now that TSM4 is coming. Here, we’ll go into a bit more detail on what TSM4 will bring.
Making TSM Better for Everyone
The main focus with TSM4 was to make TSM less intimidating and easier to use for newcomers and experienced goblins alike. To this end, we’ve completely rebuilt the UI from the ground up to be easier to use and more intuitive to navigate. Even though ease of use was one of our main goals, we’ve not forgotten about our power users, and have plenty of goodies in store for them as well!
The first thing that you will notice when opening up the core TSM4 window is a beautiful new dashboard where you can see a summary of your gold making and catch up on TSM news. The dashboard will show you how you’re doing with your gold-making and help you decide at a glance what to do next. The graph within the dashboard is highly interactive and allows you to quickly and easily track your gold on hand over time as you pursue your gold-making goals.
One of the major hurdles new TSM users face is setting up meaningful groups and operations. In TSM3, we introduced the “Quick Post from Bags” feature, which gives easy-access to the powerful functionality of TSM_Auctioning to post items on the auction house without having to create groups and operations. With TSM4, we’ve taken that a step further with the new “Base Group” which lives at the top of the group tree. This group automatically contains any item which is not in another group, and comes pre-loaded with powerful default operations for more than just Auctioning. We’ve also completely reimagined how group management works in TSM4 to make it easier to move groups around, rename them, and manage the items and operations which they are tied to.
One of the most popular features of TSM is its sniper feature. This feature allows you to snatch up deals the second they are posted on the auction house. With TSM4, we’ve integrated all the great feedback we’ve received on the sniper feature to make it easier to use and even more powerful. The sniper settings have been simplified into new dedicated sniper operations, including a default operation which comes pre-loaded in the addon. Once you start the sniper scan in TSM4, you’ll notice that the results are now ordered conveniently with the most recent results shown at the top, along with a special icon to clearly call-out the newest results. We’ve also made it much simpler to buy items as quickly as possible by getting rid of the confirmation window and replacing it with a single buyout button. Because we know people like to run sniper in the background for long periods of times, we’ve also added a new way to quickly remove things which you’re not interested in from the results, or restart the search completely to clear all the results and start fresh.
TradeSkillMaster has always had extremely powerful features to help advanced goblins make gold as efficiently as possible, and TSM4 is no different. Complex custom prices have become a staple of any mature TSM setup, so we are very excited to announce that TSM4 brings many new functions and data sources to custom prices. This includes everything from new, advanced logic functions, to being able to use things like sale rate and inventory quantities in your custom prices. We can’t wait to see how people take advantage of these new custom price features!

If you’re dying to learn more about TSM4,
, TSM’s lead developer and project manager, has finished an
AMA over on the /r/woweconomy subreddit
recently celebrated the first anniversary of his blog. The
as a one-year old goblin discusses the basics of thinking like a gold-maker.
Time is Money
The first clue to my philosophy should be obvious from my pseudonym. I am The Lazy Goldmaker. This is both a description of me and my core philosophy. People are effort minimizers by nature. You and everyone else will always drift towards the path of least resistance.
This is the number one characteristic you should seek to utilize in your gold making endeavors. Anything that requires an effort to acquire can be profitably packaged and sold for a premium in WoW. This doesn't have to be items, although that's where my focus is. It can be more gameplay-oriented services like carries, both PVP and PVE.
What does this mean?
You can obtain any item in WoW by going out and interacting with the game world. This can be questing, rep grinds, farming mobs, crafting or farming nodes. As people are by nature effort minimizers, this means you can get them to pay a premium for giving them easy access to what they need through the auction house.
This is what I base my entire gold making operation on.
Some examples of this effort minimizing behavior that you can take advantage of includes:
Farmers posting their stuff below market to sell it quickly
Overpaying to get the right amount in as few clicks as possible
Paying a premium for crafted items you can't make yourself
Posting lots of auctions with the standard UI is super hard so people won't do it
I will go more in-depth into these themes
on my blog
and show they relate to the markets I am in and my approach. For the 4th one the obvious answer is to use TSM to minimize your effort in re-posting auctions.
In game my approach is very simple. I use crafting professions to craft useful end products that players are willing to pay to get instantly. By leveraging TSM I can buy materials cheaply and post large volumes of items at the Auction House with very little effort. Crafting is boring to many players, so they are more than willing to pay to avoid having to do it themselves.
I also do flipping which is the most
time-efficient gold making strategy
in the game. Here I rely on farmers being willing to sell their stock well below market value. By being more patient I can keep my stock posted at higher prices and earn a profit reselling items.
Figure out a way you can provide items to other players at a lower price than the current auction house prices and you will be doing great!
Calling back to our
discussion about passive gold making
, /u/kanemochi has put together a
comprehensive guide on setting up and maintaining your Order Hall in patch 7.3
this guide over on r/wow
. It was written for 7.2, but little has changed since then.

for the link! I would ignore the suggestion of leaving alts pre-Argus though, as I don't think that's worth it.
I would add that Meatball is still OP and I use him as my 7th champion on every character.
Here's how to acquire him
Also, I use Kor'vas/Belath in place of Allari/Asha on my DH, since restoring troop hearts is worth a lot of resources now. The classes with "hearts" include: Demon Hunter, Druid, Mage, Priest, Shaman, and Warlock. Note that you can only use these in-game, not from the Legion companion app.
The general consensus is that getting to 950 is worth it
. Fully unlocking Argus missions requires completing all outdoor quest content, and then completing a series of mission-related quests from Alleria in Mac'Aree (to get to ilvl 925) and Turalyon in Antoran Wastes (ilvl 950). Note that the Vindicaar must be in the correct position to accept these quests.
Argus missions spawn more frequently and expire in the same time frame: 6 hours.
Argus includes missions for Blood of Sargeras which allow alts to become reasonably self-sustaining. The net profit (assuming bonus loot is acquired) is always 3 bloods (600 resources) regardless of ilvl.
Don't worry too much about equipment until you've unlocked Lightforged (epic) equipment by completing
Un grain de sable dans la machine de guerre de la Légion
for Turalyon. In fact, I've been stockpiling my
Coffre d’équipement d’Argus
on my alts until I complete the quest, as the gear is generated upon opening.
October 4 Hotfixes
Dungeon requirement was removed to finish unlocking Argus mission content.
Argus armor set missions (925 and 950) should spawn more frequently.
Starting penalty for 950 missions changed from -50% to -25% (925 remains unchanged, also at -25%).
Gold missions now have bonus loot of 1750g up from 1500g. Veiled Argunite mission rewards were buffed as well, though I don't know the numbers.
Order Resource Management
Faveur du chasseur sanglant
on all characters (or at least all alts). Note that this can be applied to BoEs for same-server alts and to heirloom gear for alt-server alts.
Complete as many
Sang de Sargeras
missions as possible (these missions are Argus content). Note that in order for this to be economical, you need to counter all resource cost threats and 200% the mission. It's also preferable not to use any Argus troops on said mission, as they effectively increase the resource cost of the mission. I especially prioritize these missions on my main, as they're a great way to funnel resources to alts.
Complete Breaching the Tomb on every char up to the Championing Our Cause step. This quest awards 15k resources. The requirements for some steps were nerfed again in 7.3, so the whole thing can probably be completed in 1-2 hours (estimated).
Slightly more time-intensive but viable options:
Watch for quick, high-resource WQs. Imp Mother Laglath is a great example as she's near a beacon for quick transport, usually awards 800-1200 resources, and is a quick one-kill WQ. Completing this on 12 chars would likely take less than an hour and award ~12k resources.
Complete The World Awaits during World Quest bonus week. While it's not efficient to go out of your way to do this, I try to ensure I complete it on any char on which I regularly complete WQs, and try to coincide with emissaries during the week as much as possible. Also note that free WQ completions count towards the quest, so those classes (DK, DH, Mage, Paladin, Warlock, Warrior) really only need to complete 13 WQs "manually", assuming you send your free WQs every day.
Another great resource is the
Wowhead Legion Class Hall Mission Guides
, which is updated for patch 7.3.
