What is this key used for? I've explored Dire Maul quite a bit and haven't found a use for it. Am I missing a whole area/room somewhere?

has anyone else noticed a large decrease in drop rate since the last patch, or I am just having incredibly bad luck? half a dozen non-tribute runs and the only times he's been freed are when someone had a key banked.

The droprate is most likely decreased, we've killed Guard Mol'Dar about 20 times now and the key only dropped once so far.

Is the key removed on 1.6.0?
Previously we always got 1-2 keys pr run. After the patch, I've done a few runs, but no key has dropped yet.

I recently did a DM north run and picked up a second one right before we killed the king (So the guy was already free) and was wondering if anyone has soloed it as a rogue? any tips?

I found Gordok Shackle Key to day.. only killed a few guys.. and im only lvl 51 :-)

70 rogue can solo, just watch slip he's a pain in the arse. It's easier if u bring a friend. I usually bring one just to make it easier. As long as u stay a bit back from them, you won't aggro them.

Can anyone confirm if you already handed this in before on a solo run if you can go back again and get the key to drop and open the chest again in otherwords is the free knot repeatable so I can keep trying to get a pattern from the chest or must I bring someone who hasn't completed this yet.

KING FIGHT:

If your doing a solo run make sure you take out his sidekick first don't even try to keep him alive. Once his sidekick is dead he can't hit you with his 1.3k spell damage it makes this alot easier. The king is a piece of cake hits like a baby at level 70

UPDATED: Confirmed the free knot quest is repeatable so you can keep coming back to try to get the pattern you want. The best chance of getting the shackle key is by looting the Ogre Tannin and the guy will run down the path , he has a very high chance to drop the key.

Can be soloed with a Lvl-70-Rogue. Unfortunately Gordok Bushwacker's key droprate has been decreased, so I had to rely on some luck with the captain or other ogres dropping it (which is annoying, because it's not necessary to kill many ogres, if at all, in order to get to the King).
The King can be soloed, too. Either kill Cho'Rush first or concentrate on the king and try to interrupt Cho's Healing spells.

Easy as a feral druid, stealth FTW.. Although, I got the key, freed him, and got , BoP crap I can't use. I wanted the epic LW patterns! :(

Farmed the 1st guard for the key, got it on second reset.

Soloed any part of Diremaul North aswell as scholo live strat and all thos other pre-bc places. can even kill solo most trash mobs in Zul'gurub shaman 70 - vengfull gear

Does this key disappear after leaving the instance? I was told it did, but a few weeks ago I kept a key for over a week before using it. But now they tell me this changed? Any info is appreciated, thanks.

I think they changed it. I had one in the bank for a while and then used it, a while back. But recently I KNOW i got one and didn't use it, and later it was gone from my bags. Definatly had it, definatly wasn't there later. So I can only assume they changed it. :( tragik

When you use the key it do disappear. And you can keep it without using it as long as you like.

Was lucky and got 3 of these in our last run.
To bad you cant unlock him 3 times in one instance :P

Unlike other keys you can get in this side, the Gordok Shackle Key does NOT dissapear when you leave the instance. I've been on several runs in which people already had the key stored in the bank.

for those who are in classic, im not sure the drop rate of the shackle key is accurate. I have been farming tannin's for my guild's vashj kills and have killed him over 30 times without seeing a shackle key. the character i've done the runs on however has never done tribute or the quest before, so that may be a factor. When i farm tannin's the bushwacker is the only mob i kill.

Some useful statistics for people that are preparing for "Insane in the Membrane" and also choose to do the repeatable Quest "Free Knot!" to get their Steamwheedle Cartel reputation back after destroying it by getting the Bloodsail Buccaneers to Honored:

I did DMN 315 times, and out of those the key dropped 164 times, which adds up to a dropchance of around 52% per run.
I only killed the 3 guards and the Gordok Bushwacker that spawns after looting the Tannin. The 164 quest turn-ins together with the 315 Tannins (+ some extra from the cache) got me to exalted.

Since you can only do 4 instances per hour (if you do them back to back) this will take you around 80 hours. To reduce useless downtime, I also pickpocketed every mob on the way back to simultaneously work on Ravenholdt. I got the required Junkboxes after around 300 runs. This will still take below 15m per run, which means I got both Steamwheedle and Ravenholdt to exalted in 80 hours. I believe this is more efficient than killing pirates for Steamwheedle rep and then going pickpocketing in LBRS/BRD. You also get a few librams from the guards for Shen'Dralar.
