I assume this is not 20 damage TOTAL (i.e. after 20 damage you lose the elixir's effect). It sounds vaguely like blessing of sanctuary. I'm not sure how useful this would be over some other guardian elixirs though.

I just bought a stack of 5 of these and i'm going to try them on my 52 paladin. Pally AoE grinding is really amazing and i normally take about 30 dmg a hit. I'll post after i test them out.

If it really takes 20 dmg off every attack then it's useful when you're swamped by lots of smaller mobs. If they do less than 20 dmg normally, you'd get no damage at all with this elixir?

Comparing the Elixir of Major Defense (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=22834#M0z) to the Earthen Elixir (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/spell=39637)

Considering the base stats of a protection warrior as follows:
15000 Armour, 11% chance to be missed, 25% block rate, 17% dodge, 17% parry, 250 block value.

Considering a boss mob (lv 73) that hits for 10,000 damage pre mitigation every 2 seconds. Sample taken is avarage of 5 runs through, each run consisting of 10,000 hits.

Default equip: Total damage taken is 20,718,964
With -20 dmg elixir: Total damage taken is ~20,610,164
With 550 ac elixir: Total damage taken is 20,432,561

Difference between -20 and 550ac is: ~177,603 damage

For a druid with default 7% chance to be missed, 30% chance to dodge, 26000 ac and the same boss, same hits etc

Default equip: Damage taken is 22,294,152
With -20dmg elixir: ~22,167,589
With 550ac elixir: 21,958,204

Difference between -20 and 550ac is: ~209,385

(Dmg with -20dmg elixir is taken as ( total damage - ( ( total damage / avarage damage ) * 20 )) so is approximate though somewhat accurate)

In all cases, Major Defense > Earthen.

Although Methadone's calculations are useful they neglect one thing. Elixir of Major Defense only works to mitagate Melee damage, while Earthen Elixir will reduce Melee AND Magical damage.

I agree that for melee heavy boss fight Major Defense might be better (particularly for a Druid with AC modifier or Protection specced tank with +10% AC talents) this potion is not meant for that.

This is great for normal 5 man instances or heroics where you are often zerged by lots of trash. Taking a continous 20 less damage really helps your healers a lot. As a tank I use these in all 5-man instances.

It seems like these would be handy for Karazhan, where non-tanks take a lot of small chunks of magical damage: Curator's Arcane Flares, Illhoof's, Imps of Annoyance, and the Maiden of Virtue's Holy Ground.

partially correct. elixir of major defense only contributes to armor, which is true it only apllies to non-magical. however, things that are like hunters, where they attack from range with guns or bows do get affected by armor as well.

granted, if your tanking something thats ranged, they turn around and mele after while, but it still apples.

also take in that the mats for earthen elixir are cheaper than those of major defense, i'd say earthen wins.

on a side note, do these stack with BoSanctuary (reduces damage by 80, causes 46 damage on block)?

I have used this elixir while AE'ing imps on Illhoof, and it appears that its magical damage reduction applies AFTER resistance.

Comparing 2 Illhoof kills with comparable times in combat:
No elixir: avg hit 65 over 1340 hits, 88K damage taken total
W/ elixir: avg hit 30 over 1167 hits, 35K damage taken total

Assuming I didn't do something stupid like forget to cast dampen on the earlier run, this presents a very significant benefit (I did cast dampen on the most recent run). I had approximately 387 FR.

After another test with Dampen, and without the elixir, I achieved an average hit of 30.
Thus it seems this DOES NOT apply post-resistance, my original statement was incorrect, and if you load up on FR gear this will have almost no effect.

okay after some tanking in kara with these, yes they do stack with BoSanc. which means they become a whole lot more useful. consider it a sort of inverse spelldamage (i believe the mechanics are all the same) so you'd be reducing damage from all sources by 100 not 80 or 20.

Elixir of Major Defense vs Earthen Elixir, formula

The two elixirs provide the same life expectancy increase when the following is true:

D / (D - 20) = 1 + 3 * 550/A

A: The 75% armor cap value for the level of the mob attacking you. (not your own level)
D: The unmitigated damage of the mob attacking you.

Performing some simple math magic and we get the following:

D = 20 * A / (3*550) + 20

Here are a few values of D for different mob levels:

Level 60: 234
Level 63: 285
Level 70: 404
Level 73: 455

If the unmitigated mob damage is less, Earthen Elixir is better. If it is more Elixir of Major Defense is the winner. This of course assumes physical damage only.

I think it is pretty safe to say that Elixir of Major Defense is better in the vast majority of fights against physical damage elites of any kind and level, the only exception being if you are hitting the armor cap for the mob such when a plate wearer goes to a lower level dungeon.

Earthen elixir can be favorable against some ordinary mobs, especially if they are fast hitting, but it is still somewhat situational.

Note that abilities that reduce attacker damage such as Druid/Warrior AP Debuff, Paladin BoS, etc. improve the effectiveness of Earthen Elixir by reducing the unmitigated damage of the mob beforehand. So for example a paladin using BoS should add 80 to the above unmitigated values before choosing his grinding elixir.

It's amazing how some of you guys have no clue at all.

For a start, quit using fire resistance for illhoof imps, that's just gimp...but that's off topic.

It's clear that this elixir is for tanking a lot of mobs that hits often for small amounts, right? Who would then say "It's useless" after comparing it for a boss main tank?

This is very useful for, say, murloc tanking at Morogrim, trash tanking in Hyjal maybe, tanking a'lars adds or AoE tanking on Mu'ru.

The important question here is though is the reduction applied before any reduction for armour? I very strongly suspect it will be in which case it's not as great for a tank due to their higher armour levels.

Dont be so hasty. this may not be bad when coupled with the fact that theres fights where mobs hit you for less then 50 damage a hit but theres over 30 of them

I could see this useful if you're a non-healing class running through a low lvl instance (running a friend through, or farming for a rare BoE blue). If mobs normally hit you for 50, they'd hit your for 30 afterward.

This elixir is godly when grinding non-elites... if you add up all the 20s that have not hit you, they can very well add up in the high thousands range...

Is this after mitigation? With my 27k armor, 20 damage is equivalent of 70-ish damage taken by you clothies. Sure, it won't matter much in a boss fight, but against the masses, it could make a big difference.

When tanking Illhoof adds, a properly spec'd and geared mage can receive 40-60 damage per imp, with anywhere between 0-15 imps active at once. With an average of 5 imps spamming fireball every 2 seconds (or whatever their cast-time is) this elixir can prevent 3000 damage every minute. The fight itself can last between 3 to 8 minutes.

Stoneskin totem, for example. If it does you could be looking at 60+ damage reduction, which is huge and very worthwhile.

for example if something hits you for 25 it wont hit you for 5, i expect it would follow the damage mitigation cap of 75% reduction or else this could be overpowered in AoE grinding. i cant confirm this though, mb when im bored someday

Has anyone tried this yet on the poor mage when they have to AOE the worm things in Magisters Terrace? When 20 or more mobs are on you then, mitagating 10-20 dmg each can reduce the incoming dmg by 200-400/sec. That could be enough to allow the healer to keep up.
